Elora Shehabuddin

Gender Studies Scholar | Professor at Berkeley | Director, Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies

Dr. Elora Shehabuddin is a Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies and Global Studies at UC Berkeley, where she also serves as Chair of Global Studies and and Director of the Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies. She holds an A.B. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Previously, she was a Professor at Rice University.


An accomplished interdisciplinary scholar, her works include Sisters in the Mirror (2021) and Reshaping the Holy (2008), which have shaped discussions on gender, women’s activism, religion, and social transformation in South Asia. She has been recognized with numerous fellowships and awards, including the 2023 Coomaraswamy Book Prize, a Carnegie Scholar Award, and the Aaron Wildavsky Dissertation Award.


Elora brings to the UBUI Board her expertise in gender studies, South Asia studies, and critical development studies, helping to shape inclusive and equitable policies and initiatives across the U.S. and Bangladesh.
